October is National Dyslexia Awareness Month, but it is left up to each state to do its own activities. With a grant through the TN/KY Branch of The International Dyslexia Association, we have placed baskets of mints in schools. The package on the mint says "You are worth a 'mint' to dyslexic students." We also included local contact information. Placemats are also available featuring October Awareness month for use in restaurants, churches, etc. to be used at mealtime. Some local churches use them on a Wednesday evening at their church family meal. For more information call: 885-5804 or 886-3169. The purpose of the special month is to increase awareness and understanding of persons with this invisible disability. Nancy Hennessy, past President of The International Dyslexia Association, says "When a child does not learn to read, their lives are affected forever." Estimates by the US Department of Health & Human Services, show that 15% of all American students may have dyslexia
I am writing on behalf of all the students, parents and teachers who are experiencing the frustration of Dyslexia. I have been Dyslexic since elementary school. After failing the third and fifth grades, I was sent to Nashville, Tennessee to Peabody College. It was there that I was diagnosed and began to receive help. Because I was so far behind others, I still had difficulty in the middle school years. At a great deal of expense, my parents sent me (again) to Tennessee to a private school for my High School education. I am a college graduate with a B.S. in Pharmacy and have been practicing my vocation for 48 years. It is time that something is done in the State of Kentucky to recognize and to help those who have DYSLEXIA. PLEASE – parents and teachers contact your State Representatives to make them aware of the need for improving our educational responsibility in this area. -John L. Hopson, Local Pharmacist |
